Hungary’s Digital Nomad Visa: Who Can Apply and How It Works

Hungary’s digital nomad visa, the White Card allows third country nationals who work remotely for foreign employers or clients to live in Hungary while continuing their work from abroad. I often speak with people who want to spend a longer period in Hungary without taking up local employment. Some work for companies based in another country. Others are freelancers or business owners whose clients are located abroad. For many of them, the White Card may be an option.

At the same time, many applications are refused because applicants misunderstand the rules, submit incomplete documents, or plan activities that are not permitted under this type of residence status.

This guide explains the main points you should know before applying.

What is the Hungarian White Card (Digital Nomad Visa)?

According to the currently applicable legislation, the White Card is a residence permit granted to a person who is employed in a country other than Hungary and performs their work from Hungary by using advanced digital technology. It may also be granted to a person who holds an ownership interest in a profitable business established outside Hungary and carries out their work or manages that business remotely from Hungary. In simple terms, this specific type of permit was designed for people who can work online while living in Hungary. The idea is straightforward: your place of residence is Hungary, but your work and income come from abroad.

The White Card is often called the Hungarian digital nomad visa, although the official terminology may differ from the language used on travel websites and social media.

Who Qualifies For It?

People who qualify for the Hungary White Card digital nomad visa generally have a stable income from outside Hungary and perform their work remotely. However, working for a foreign employer is not sufficient in itself. The work must genuinely be performed remotely through advanced digital technology, a term that is not specifically defined by Hungarian law. It is clear that the nature of the work will be the main question: can it be performed online without requiring your physical presence in the country where your employer or company or clients are located.

The precise requirements should always be checked carefully because even small details can affect the outcome of an application. In practice, the immigration authority usually examines where your income comes from, how stable it is, whether your work can genuinely be carried out online, and whether you have sufficient financial resources. Currently, it is also required to provide evidence that your net monthly income has reached or exceeded EUR 3,000 during the last six months preceding the application.

What Can and Can’t You Do While Holding a White Card?

A White Card holder may generally live in Hungary while continuing eligible remote work performed for foreign employers or clients. This is the point where many people become confused. A person may assume that every type of work is allowed simply because they have legal residence in Hungary. Unfortunately, that is not always the case: advanced technical solutions are required for the work which needs to be done remotely.

Having a White Card allows you to stay in Hungary for 1 year which can be extended with an additional year, but after these two years, a new application needs to be submitted It also allows you to travel within the Schengen Area for up to 90 days during any 180-day period. The White Card, however, does not allow family reunification which means that your family members cannot apply for a stay in Hungary based on your digital nomad visa.

Having a White Card also excludes you from applying for permanent residency in Hungary: National Permanent Residence is specifically excluded by law and EU Permanent Residence requires 5 years of consecutive stay without any interruptions in Hungary.

How Do You Apply and Why Are Applications Commonly Refused?

Applications for the Hungary White Card digital nomad visa usually require careful preparation because the immigration authority closely examines the supporting evidence, especially the financial situation.

The exact procedure depends on several factors, including your nationality, your location at the time of application, and the rules that apply to your circumstances. You may need to apply abroad, or you may be permitted to submit the application from within Hungary: it depends on your country’s status. If you are from a visa-free country, you can do the submission from Hungary, but if you are not from a visa-free country, you can only do the application from your home country.

In my experience, refusals often happen for a few common reasons:

  • First, applicants may not provide clear evidence showing that they genuinely work remotely.
  • Secondly, the submitted financial records may be incomplete, inconsistent, or insufficient to demonstrate compliance with the applicable income requirement.
  • Another problem arises when the authority believes that the applicant’s activities do not fit the purpose of the White Card and they do not perform the work with advanced digital solutions.
  • Finally, many people rely on information they have read online without checking whether the law has changed. Immigration law develops quickly, and a rule that applied a year ago may no longer apply today.
